GSM Guide — Fabric Weight for Sportswear Buyers

GSM means grams per square metre. It is a practical way to talk about fabric weight when briefing an OEM or ODM manufacturer. This guide explains what GSM communicates commercially, how ranges typically differ by garment type, and how to specify weight without treating a number as a complete fabric specification. Why GSM matters in quoting and sampling

Fabric weight affects cost, drape, opacity, warmth, and sometimes decoration behaviour. Heavier fabrics often cost more per metre and can change cutting yields. Lighter fabrics may suit hot-climate match play but risk see-through issues in light colours. Mid-weight knits often balance training and retail expectations. Stating a GSM target helps the factory propose comparable options and avoid sampling a fabric that feels obviously wrong on first touch.

GSM also helps compare seasons. If last year’s training tee at a known GSM performed well, saying “match last season’s weight” or providing that GSM range shortens development. If you want a lighter summer version, say so explicitly so ODM guidance does not copy the previous weight by habit.

Exact “perfect GSM” tables that claim one number for every brand are marketing fiction. Useful buyer guidance stays in ranges and trade-offs. Lightweight performance tops often sit in lower GSM bands where breathability is valued. Mid-weight apparel occupies a broad centre where many retail and club programmes live. Fleece and outer layers move higher for warmth and shape. Your sealed sample remains the authority for what “right” feels like for your customers.

When you request a quote, give a range rather than a single invented number if you are unsure — for example a target band and a reference garment. Ask for swatches or sample cuts when handfeel is critical. Lock GSM only after you have touched and approved the direction you want bulk to follow.

Trade-offs buyers should expect

Lower GSM can improve comfort in heat but may show more skin tone or undergarment lines in pale colours. Higher GSM can improve opacity and structure but may feel warm in humid markets or change how a garment hangs. Stretch content and knit type can make a mid GSM feel lighter or denser than the number suggests. Sublimation artwork on unsuitable constructions fails regardless of an attractive GSM label.

Decoration density interacts with weight. Heavy embroidery on very light knits can distort. Dense prints on soft light fabrics can stiffen handfeel. Discuss method and GSM together. Changing one after the other is sealed can force a new sample.

How to write GSM into an RFQ

State garment type, destination climate if relevant, target GSM range or “match reference,” opacity concerns for light colours, and decoration method. Attach a photo of the reference fabric surface if you lack a physical swatch. Note whether you need identical GSM across a full kit set or can accept related weights for tops and bottoms. Do not chase the lowest GSM only to save freight if opacity or durability fails in your market. Returns and remakes cost more than a modest weight increase.
