Size Charts — How Buyers Should Brief Fit

Size charts are the measurement contract between a brand and a factory. If you already hold a graded size chart, attach it to the RFQ. If you do not, say so and describe fit intent: athletic slim, regular team, youth school, retail relaxed, or match-kit specific. ODM support can help develop a block, but development still needs your approval before bulk.

What a useful size package contains

Provide graded measurements for each size in the run you intend to buy. Include critical points for the garment type — for tops that often means chest, body length, sleeve length, and other style-specific points; for bottoms waist, hip, inseam, and rise as relevant. State units clearly (centimetres or inches) and keep one unit system across the file. Note measurement method: how the garment is laid, whether stretch is measured with tension rules, and where landmarks sit.

Also provide size run ratios for the order — how many units per size — because cutting and packing plans depend on assortment. If youth and adult blocks differ, separate them. If men’s and women’s fits differ, do not force one chart onto both.

• Graded measurement sheet — sizes you will actually buy.
• Tolerance notes — acceptable variance per critical point.
• Fit intent — slim, regular, relaxed, or sport-specific.
• Reference sample — physical or previous approved style when available.
• Size ratio — planned units per size for cutting and packing.

Tolerances and why they matter

No production lot matches a chart to zero millimetres on every unit. Tolerances define what remains commercially acceptable. Unstated tolerances create arguments after goods arrive. State critical points that must be tighter — for example chest on a fitted jersey — and points that can be wider. Agree tolerances at sealing, not after a warehouse complaint.

Stretch fabrics complicate measurement. Agree whether points are measured relaxed or under defined tension. Without that rule, factory and buyer measure different realities. Write the method into the tech pack or size notes.

Fit samples before bulk

A fit sample proves that pattern and construction deliver the chart on a real body or dress form standard you trust. Buyer comments should be specific: “add 1 cm body length in size L” is actionable; “make it nicer” is not. After comments, a revised sample or written confirmation should freeze the block. Sealing without wearing or measuring against your standard is how brands approve garments they later reject.

If multiple colourways share one block, confirm that decoration or fabric changes will not alter fit. Heavier GSM or different stretch can shift measurements. Re-check critical points when material changes mid-programme.

What not to do

Do not download a random internet size chart and treat it as your brand standard without testing. Do not mix adult and youth logic on one sheet without labels. Do not change grading after bulk cutting without accepting scrap and delay. Do not expect a factory to “know your market’s sizes” without data — regional preferences differ and must be specified.

Working with athletes, retail, and school fits

Team kits, retail activewear, and school uniforms often need different ease. A chart that works for competitive athletes can feel tight for staff polos or youth PE. Say who will wear the garment and whether mobility, layering, or appearance is the priority. ODM development can propose blocks, but only your wear tests — or a trusted fit model protocol — should freeze them.

When importing into markets with strong online return cultures, inconsistent grading across colourways creates expensive reverse logistics. Keep one graded system per silhouette family. If you introduce a new fit block, name it and sample it; do not silently alter an existing style code and expect customers not to notice.
